Vaishno Devi
Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered and significant pilgrimage sites in India, drawing millions of devotees from around the world every year. Nestled in the Trikuta Mountains near the town of Katra in Jammu & Kashmir, the temple is a spiritual sanctuary where people come to seek the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi, a manifestation of Goddess Mahalakshmi. The goddess is believed to fulfill the wishes of her devotees, making the pilgrimage a deeply spiritual and transformative experience.
According to legend, only those whom Mata calls are able to complete the pilgrimage, reinforcing the belief that the journey is not just physical but divine. The trek to the shrine, located at an altitude of approximately 5,200 feet, spans 12-14 km from Katra. Pilgrims often walk barefoot, chanting devotional hymns along the way. For those unable to make the journey on foot, facilities like battery-operated cars, helicopter services, ponies, and palanquins are provided by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
The shrine is not only significant for spiritual reasons but also holds great cultural importance, with visitors coming from all corners of the country and beyond, representing the unity of different faiths and beliefs.
Mythological Significance
The story of Vaishno Devi is steeped in legend. According to Hindu mythology, Mata Vaishno Devi was an incarnation of the combined powers of Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvati. She took human form to spread righteousness and defeat evil forces on earth. During her life on earth, she meditated in a cave in the Trikuta Mountains, and it is believed that this cave is the very one where her temple now stands.
It is also said that the demon Bhairon Nath, who had evil intentions toward her, chased her to the mountains. To protect herself, the goddess took refuge in a cave. When Bhairon Nath continued his pursuit, she ultimately beheaded him. In his final moments, Bhairon Nath realized his wrongdoings, and Mata Vaishno Devi forgave him, blessing his temple near her own. This is why devotees also visit Bhairo Baba Temple after worshipping at the Bhavan.

About the Journey to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan
The Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan is located 12-14 km uphill from Katra. Before starting your journey, it is mandatory to obtain a Yatra Parchi (travel receipt), which is free of cost. You can get the Yatra Parchi at designated counters in Katra, including the Katra Bus Stand, Katra Railway Station, and Katra Chowk. These counters are open from 5 AM to 10 PM. Alternatively, you can also book the Yatra Parchi online through maavaishnodevi.org.
For all devotees above the age of 3 years, an ID card is required, and it will be checked along with the travel receipt before starting the journey. The Yatra Parchi is an important document for completing the pilgrimage, ensuring that all pilgrims are registered for their safety and convenience during the trek.
Banganga: The Starting Point of the Journey
Once you have obtained your Yatra Parchi, your pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan begins from Banganga, which is a short 10-15 minute ride from Katra. You can either take an auto-rickshaw, which costs around ₹100-150, or ask your hotel if they provide a free pick and drop service to Banganga, as many hotels in Katra offer this convenience.
The trek from Banganga to the Bhavan is approximately 12-12.5 km long. The first significant stop along the route is Ardhkuwari, located 6 km from Banganga. There are two paths to reach the Bhavan from Ardhkuwari:
1.Hathimata Route: This path is about 9 km long and is considered more traditional.
2.Himkoti Marg: This is a slightly shorter route, spanning 8.5 km, and is generally less crowded. It is also accessible by battery car, a service provided by the Shrine Board for pilgrims who prefer not to walk the entire distance. The fare for the battery car from Ardhkuwari to the Bhavan is ₹350, and you can book this service at the counter or online via maavaishnodevi.org.
Both routes offer scenic views and spiritual energy, making the journey to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan a memorable experience.
Helicopter Service to Mata Vaishno Devi
For those looking to reach Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan quickly, a helicopter service is available, landing at Sanji Chhat, which is just 2 km from the Bhavan. This option is especially convenient for pilgrims who may have difficulty with the trek or those short on time.
The one-way booking for the helicopter ride costs approximately ₹1300, while a round-trip ticket is priced at ₹3600. Although you can book your helicopter tickets at the service counter in Katra, it is highly recommended to make your reservations online through maavaishnodevi.org. Due to high demand, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons, booking in advance—typically 1 to 1.5 months ahead—is advisable to secure your seat. This ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey to the revered shrine.
Tarakot Marg: An Alternative Route
Another route to consider from Banganga is Tarakot Marg, which merges directly with Himkoti Marg and leads you to Ardhkuwari. This path spans approximately 7.5 km, making it a slightly longer option compared to the more direct routes.
While Tarakot Marg offers its own unique scenic views, it is advisable for those traveling on foot to opt for the traditional route from Banganga, as it is generally more frequented by pilgrims and may provide a more enriching experience. Whether you choose Tarakot Marg or the older path, each route offers a blend of spirituality and natural beauty, enhancing your pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan.

The Shrine Board at Mata Vaishno Devi has made numerous provisions to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable pilgrimage experience for devotees:
